In our VMware environment, VM snapshot backup is keep failing or going into hung state after initiating the backup job on couple of virtual servers which has more than 24 disks.

We use Veritas Netbackup as a backup solution in our VMware infrastructure environment and we have couple of netbackup appliances.

There are two methods are enabled for the backups. One is NBD transport method and other one is SAN transport method. Please refer this link how does these backup transport methods work.

As per the Veritas support article, found below information on both backup transport methods –

The SAN transport mode requires the VMware Backup Host to reside on a physical machine with access to Fibre Channel or iSCSI SAN containing the virtual disks to be accessed. This is an efficient data path because no data needs to be transferred through the production ESX/ESXi host.

This VCSA (vCenter Server Appliance) has come with more different features when compared with previous versions.

To conclude that, if your VMware infrastructure environment on vCenter version 6.5 and below, VMware vendor advised to upgrade to VCSA 6.7 version to handle or resolve the VM backup job hang issues when virtual server has more than 24 disks.
