I built a new a ESXi host with operating system 6.5 and host has been patched. Later, added to the existing cluster.
Have taken the host out of maintenance mode and immediately started showing the below error message in Summary tab –
There was an error unconfiguring the vSphere HA agent on this host. To solve this problem, reconnect the host to vCenter server. Can refer VMware KB article.
Looked at the ESXi host events and found the below error message –
There was an error unconfiguring the vSphere HA agent on this host.
The vSphere HA unconfiguration task failed to send the updated host list to the vSphere agent on the host. This condition may interfere with the vSphere HA cluster to which th ehost used to belong and sould be corrected.
Action: Add the host back to a vCenter of version 5.0 or later.

Based on the above event and advise by the VMware, I’ve disconnected the ESXi host and reconnected back to the same cluster. But, no luck.
Before I follow any more troubleshooting steps, I want to check whether FDM vib package is installed on the server or not.
Have enabled the SSH service and logged into the host via Putty session. And ran the below command to validate –
esxcli software vib list |grep vmware-fdm
The output showed blank. It means, required fdm VIB package not installed on this host. Just want to make sure, whether the error related to fdm VIB package or something, I ran the same command another host which was in production already.
It showed the fdm package installed.
Steps to reconfigure the vSphere HA agent on ESXi host 6.5
So, I’ve decided to reconfigure the vSphere HA on this ESXi host. Have followed the below steps to fix the error –
Select the host which you want to reconfigure the HA and right click, click on “Reconfigure for vSphere HA” option.
That helps to fix the “There was an error unconfiguring the vSphere HA agent on this host. To solve this problem, reconnect the host to vCenter server” error.
